Intent-First Computing

What if systems understood what you were trying to accomplish, not just what buttons you pressed? Notes on a paradigm shift.

Every interaction with a computer today follows the same pattern: you translate your intention into a series of inputs, and the system executes those inputs literally.

Want to schedule a meeting? Open calendar, click new event, fill in title, select time, add attendees, click save. Each step is a translation—your goal broken into mechanical actions the system understands.

This works. It’s predictable. It’s also exhausting at scale.

The Translation Tax

Every translation consumes attention. Not much per action, but thousands of actions per day add up. You spend cognitive energy not on what you’re trying to accomplish, but on how to accomplish it within the constraints of the interface.

This is the paradigm we’ve lived with since the invention of the GUI. Direct manipulation. Explicit commands. Literal execution.

But what if systems could understand intent directly?

What Intent-First Means

Intent-first computing inverts the model. Instead of translating your goal into steps, you express the goal and the system figures out the steps.

“Schedule a meeting with Sarah next week to discuss the Q4 roadmap.”

A system that understands intent would:

  • Check both calendars for availability

  • Propose times that work

  • Draft an appropriate meeting title

  • Send the invite

  • Handle the back-and-forth if the first time doesn’t work

You’re not clicking through forms. You’re stating what you want. The system does the translation.

Why Now

This wasn’t possible until recently. Understanding intent requires:

  • Language comprehension at human level

  • Context awareness across multiple systems

  • Reasoning about goals and constraints

  • Action capability across different tools

We now have AI systems that can do all four. Not perfectly. Not in every domain. But well enough in enough situations to make intent-first interaction viable.

The Hard Problems

Intent-first computing raises questions we haven’t had to answer before:

Ambiguity. Human intentions are often underspecified. What does “next week” mean? What counts as “appropriate” for a meeting title? The system has to make assumptions—and know when to ask.

Trust. If the system is taking actions on your behalf, how do you verify it’s doing the right thing? How do you correct mistakes before they compound?

Control. How much latitude do you give the system? At what point does it check back with you?

These are design problems more than technical problems. They’re about finding the right balance between autonomy and oversight.

The Prize

If we get this right, the prize is enormous: computing that serves intention rather than demanding translation. Humans freed from mechanical coordination. Attention recovered for judgment, creativity, and presence.

That’s what I mean when I talk about restoring human agency. Not just making tasks faster, but changing the fundamental relationship between humans and computers.

We’re at the beginning of this shift. The technology is viable. The paradigm is ready for reinvention.
